Things that make the day happier

April 10th, 2010 at 1:58 am No Comments

1. Scents. Eu de Miel by L’Occtaine is my go-to scent for picking up the morning. It smells literally like honey water and just a whiff of it makes my day about 1.5x better. I mean, let’s be real, wtf kind of smell is going to make your day significantly better? I’d say 1.5 is pretty generous.

2. Happy music. I haven’t been tuning into my usual Youtube/Pandora/Grooveshark stations since starting on web because, much like writing, I can’t concentrate on scripting when listening to things with lyrics (and by god…there is a lot of scripting on this project). Lyrics just mess with my head. But, shit like Glee and Ella Fitzgerald and Doris Day and Final Fantasy orchestrated give me calm + (faux?) endorphins in chaos.

3. Clothes. Comfy clothes that DON’T make me feel like a complete scrub. My Nine West ‘Rocha’s in black are amazing. Classically styled pumps with a tiny platform that makes them super comfortable whilst still being 3+ inches tall. Gold. Ditto to my recently acquired sweater from JCrew that’s perfect for summer/beach wear.

4. Cute sites. I don’t mean cute sites, but sites that share cuteness. Like dailysquee.com. Powder puff is not amused.

5. That’s about it, really. No round number here. If these things are lacking a bad day is more or less doomed to shit.

Temporary assignment on the internets team

March 8th, 2010 at 9:29 pm No Comments

I started a temporary assignment on the web/mobile team as a web designer about three weeks ago. The environment is incredibly different from that of QA, but I’m beginning to get used to it. Summary of important experiences so far:

I have my own trashcan. We only get a large trashcan every few rows in QA. Sometimes that trashcan moves, and it throws off your whole exit groove. In web I carried my trash with me to the break room’s trash bins for the first two weeks until I realized that I have my own tiny garbage can! Downside, it doesn’t get emptied too often. Reserved for odorless items.

Their headphones are kind of not great. Ones we get in QA are the fat, padded, enclosed type headsets. The pair I’m using in web hurts my brain after awhile, like those metal headbands that you purchase because they look so cute but end up tearing off after an hour of focused cranial pain. It also feels like everyone around me can hear any sound that comes out of them.

Everyone works with the internets, but I’ve yet to meet anyone that’s from the internet. I’m not going to explain this one.

Their water cooler is confusing. Yea, people laughed when I asked them how they used it, but I could not consistently get the water cooler to dispense water when I started (I can’t find a picture example so here’s a paint diagram):

water cooler

…So I’d stand there for about a minute looking around sheepishly, pressing the dispenser lever every few seconds and wondering why God had forsaken me. Today I realized what I was doing wrong. The water doesn’t dispense unless you apply pressure to the UPPER part of the lever. What’s exceptionally stupid about this is that while you can only trigger the water flow by pressing the top of the lever, if you slide the cup down while it’s dispensing it’s not like the water stops…so why can’t you start it by pressing the lower half? And why is the lower half even available if pressing it doesn’t dispense water?!

And why does switching from cold to hot cause the thing to beep and lock after a few seconds?!?!

JFDSKF.

There’s an overabundance of Kona coffee blend in the breakroom drawers. I had quit coffee for a good 9 months before the start of my TA in web. I feel more productive when I’m caffeinated, though that’s probably just jitteriness creating an illusion of increased speed. Default company coffee at Blizzard has always been pretty bad coffee. Columbia Supreme is the lesser of the two evils; unfortunately, it appears to be endangered in web world.

Obviously, none of these things are important.

Except for the water cooler.

Long Beach Comic Expo

February 22nd, 2010 at 9:58 pm No Comments

This past weekend I tagged along with Trent to check out the miniature Long Beach Comic Con. It was a one day gig and Trent was offered a table in artist alley. I’d never done the tabling thing before so heck yea I went!

First thing he does after setting up though is leave me to man the table asdfasdf. I didn’t expect that people would want to chat with anyone except the artist, but it was still REALLY nerve-wracking because I’d never worked a convention before and people walking by were eyeing his goods but I wasn’t sure if I should immediately try to start up conversation or if that’d scare them away (a number of attendees looked like they really might be scared away if I made eye contact) and I know jack about the industry aside from flittering about with mainstream graphic novels like Sandman or Hush or Fables. Lord. Eventually I fell into the groove once I got a chance to see how he handled people and just tried to mimic what I could or play off his conversations. As the day went on I had to make an effort to be even more vocal with people who stopped by to chat with him as his commissions started to pile up.

Overall it was awesome. Quite a few visitors said they came to the expo specifically for Trent as he’d been out of the convention circuit for so long (5 years since his last con). One hardcore guy had a tattoo on his shoulder of a character from the Creed series. I got to listen in on old school followers giving him pro-tips on how the industry’s changed since; commiserate with other female-halves of convention go-ers about handling tables (not that it was a miserable experience in the least. I just mean the jovial kind of commiserating); do assistant type things like get food and drank; and still had time to wander the floor to check out some other very talented artists.

He already signed up for the full weekend Comic Con in October before coming to this mini version, and it falls on Halloween weekend! I want to dress up as something cool! (By “cool” I don’t mean “scandalous”!)

They’re going to need more moms.

January 21st, 2010 at 1:34 pm No Comments

Just stumbled across this awesome reconstruction site, Reknit. Their angle is that you send in old knitted items, and their “mom” unravels and repurposes them into a selected item of the month. For the month of January, it’s sweaters to scarves for $30 :)

Reknit

I voted beanies for next month even though I don’t have any old knits laying around. Cut-off gloves appear to be in the lead :|

Pretty neat idea and nice presentation. If it takes off… they’ll need to hire on more moms.

By god I love passion fruit drinks.

January 19th, 2010 at 9:46 pm 2 Comments

I’m not even certain I know what a passion fruit looks like. Do the drinks taste anything like the fruit? Would trying a real passion fruit be as great a disappointment as when I was made aware of the disconnect between strawberry fruit roll-ups and real strawberries?

I added photos from Christmas Eve to Flickr :) A bit too lazy to link the photos directly.

Except for this one:

Twinkle's doghouse

AMAZING collapsible strawberry doghouse that my cousin acquired in Taiwan. Must get for imaginary pet. Or future Corgi :) …If Trent and I ever get around to making that happen. Pets are a big responsibility, which is why I insist that he make it his dog, and I just be the quasi-owner who plays with it and such. Yes, it feels as though there’s a Corgi craze overcoming Orange County (or just Blizzard), but I don’t care anymore. They’re freaking adorable.
